Calving Season

Image We start calving in the middle of February and calve until about the middle of April. We calve out 200 cows and 50 heifers (heifers are  two years old and are having their first baby!) As of March 1 we had 130 calves, so February was a really busy month because as ranchers calving season is the most important time of year. At our ranch we are around our cows all day, so we know if something is calving, so we can be there to make sure everything goes okay. For example, a cow can be calving backwards, that means the calf is coming out backwards their back legs are coming out first instead of their front legs. This is dangerous and we always assist the cow because the calf’s umbilical cord can break before their nose is out. In addition, during the night the cows still calve too, so my dad checks the cows and 8 pm and 10 pm and then I wake up at 3 am to check on them and then again at 6 am. So I am due for a full nights sleep soon! 🙂
